THE EFFECTS OF DUAL TASK TRAINING WITH INTERNET-BASED VIDEOS ON THE COGNITIVE STATUS AND BALANCE OF ELDERLY PEOPLE WITH MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT

This study was carried out to assess the effects of dual-task education supported by internet-based videos reflecting their backgrounds on their cognitive status and balance levels of elderly individuals who had mild cognitive impairment and lived in nursing homes. This single blinded randomized controlled experimental study was been conducted between August 15, 2018 and October 30, 2018 in a Nursing Home in Adana. A total of 24 people participated in this study; 12 individuals were in the intervention group and 12 were in the control group. The data for the study were collected by the co-researcher, a specialist psychiatric nurse. During personal interviews using the Personal Information Form, the Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination Test, and the The Timed Up & Go Test, The Berg Balance Scale, Single Task Timed 10-Meter Walk Test. The individuals in the intervention group received cognitive-motor dual task involving internet-based videos for 20 minutes once a week for two months. During this period, 10-15 minutes of unstructured interviews and walking were carried out with individuals in the control group. In this study, a significant difference was found between the difference experimental and control groups' pre-post-test mean scores on the SMMSE, BBS, TUG and 10MWT (p<0.05). This study found that cognitive-motor dual task education using internet videos improved the cognitive functions and balance levels of elderly individuals with mild impairment. It is recommended that cognitive-motor dual task studies with internet-based videos be conducted in care institutions responsible for managing elderly people that have mild cognitive impairment.
