DETERMINING THE FACTORS OF THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF ESSENTIAL OIL APPLICATIONS IN AROMATHERAPY

Essential oils used in aromatherapy have been carried out as a supplement in the treatment of various diseases from past to present. There are important factors that determine the effects of essential oil applications in aromatherapy, which cause its popularity, today. Application products with small molecular size and high lipid content may be more easily absorbed. In dermal application, the presence of hair follicles on the skin can make absorption easier. However, since the rate of absorption is higher than normal in skin diseases, the skin of elderly individuals, and infants, careful application is required. It has been observed that the absorption of essential oils increases, especially in aromatherapy, by applying with hand massage, using during bath and evening applications. Due to their high concentration, physiologically active essential oils should not be used directly. Essential oils that can be taken by dermal, inhalation and oral routes must be diluted with a suitable oil. Essential oils can cause toxic effects when directly inhaled, ingested and applied dermally. When taken through the skin and inhalation, they can reach the circulatory system as quickly as oral intake. The aim of applying physiologically active essential oils is to bring out the maximum therapeutic benefit, while keeping the accompanying toxic or undesirable effects to a minimum. For this reason, important factors that determine the health effects such as the route of application, the dose used, the frequency of application, the time, eating, and bathing should be considered for the safe and effective use of essential oils, while applying in aromatherapy.
