Purpose: The objective of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OB-Quest) and evaluate the psychometric properties of the translated version by validity and reliability testing.
Methods: The cross-cultural adaptation of the five-stage translation-back translation method was followed, which suggested by Beaton et al. In total, 227 participants with a mean age of 22.68 ± 7.34 years completed the Turkish version of the questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the 12-item Short Form Survey (SF‐12). Construct validity was analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using AMOS. In the CFA, the root means the square error of approximation (RMSEA) value, comparative fit index (CFI), Adjusted Goodness of Fit Index (AGFI) and chi-square to degrees of freedom ratio (CMIN/DF) were analysed. The reliability of the questionnaire was evaluated by analysing the consistency between items and test and retest scores.
Results: According to the CFA, the factor structure of the OB-Quest indicated a good model fit for factors (CMIN/DF: 2.393; GFI: 0.937; AGFI: 0.896; RMSEA: 0.079). The questionnaire showed moderate internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.625. There was an excellent correlation between test and retest in the OB-Quest scale total score (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.898). The result of the psychometric analysis showed that OB-Quest Turkish had moderate internal consistency, excellent test-retest reliability, and sufficient construct validity. Furthermore, criterion-related validity results showed moderate correlation except for SF-12 mental.
Conclusions: The results showed that the self-reported version of OB-Quest-Turkish is a valid and reliable scale for assessing the occupational balance of individuals.
