THE EFFECT OF PILATES GROUP EXERCISE PROGRAM ON FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCORES, POSTURE, AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN SEDENTARY WOMEN: A PILOT STUDY

Objective: The Pilates exercises were introduced by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, originally called 'centering'. These exercises work on 6 simple principles with or without special equipment. These principles are; centering, concentration, tenderness, flow and respiration(1). Functional movement analysis is a screening system that shows functional deficiencies(2,3). The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of 12-week pilates group exercise training on functional movement scores in sedentary women. Secondarily; posture, depression level and quality of life were evaluated. Material and Methods: This study has been reviewed by Ethics Committee of Non-Interventional Researches of the University of Medipol in Istanbul and its ethical conformity has been approved. (10840098-604.01.01-E.45484). Participants were informed of the voluntary consent form and signed the consent form. 20 sedentary women were included in the study between 30-50 years of age. Physical activity levels of the participants are evaluated with frequency, intensity, time (FIT Score) questionnaire. Those below 20 points were considered to be sedentary and included in the study(4). Functional Movement Screen (FMS™) (Deep squat, Hurdle step, In line lunge, Shoulder mobility, Active leg raise, Trunk stability push-up, Rotation stability) was applied. Secondarily; New York Posture Analysis Scale(5), Beck Depression Scale(6,7,8) and Short Form 36(SF-36)(9) were used. Pilates exercises were applied by a physiotherapist. The exercises continued for three sessions per week for 12 weeks. The evaluations were repeated before exercise and just after finish of the exercise. Results: Statistical significant difference was found in FMS total score, New York Posture Analysis Scale, Beck Depression Inventory and SF-36 subscores except general health parameter. Conclusion: Participating in Pilates exercises can improve functional status, posture, depression and health related quality of life.
