PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC: PHARMACIST'S ROLE

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported in the year 2018 that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the first leading cause of death in the world. During COVID-19 outbreak, mortality rates are markedly very high in patients with CVD. Due to the applications of some restrictions (for example, curfew and social distance), accessing to health care and and alterations in lifestyle behaviors can affect CVD prevention, detection, and management. Additionally, COVID-19 is found to be associated with heart problems, such as blood clots, strokes and valves stenosis. Also some drugs, hydroxychlorokin, azithromycin, antivirals (ritonavir/lopinavir ) used for COVID-19 treatment have adverse effects on cardiovascular system via QT prolongation. Hospitalization duration of COVID-19 patients can cause blood clotting problems. Health professionals have vital roles on non-pharmacological treatment and prevention of CVD, monitoring of drug therapy and making routine tests of patients with CVD. Also health professionals should be careful about monitoring of hospitalized patients (disease morbidities, drug side effects and clotting problems). Additionally community should be informed on accurate and reliable information. Pharmacists, who are the closest accessible health advisors, are valuable healthcare professionals with their knowledge, skills and abilities, will take part in the prevention and management of CVD during outbreak.
